Surfing at your local Markham Coffee Shop…think about security.

Hacking is not confined only to those with lots of knowledge and time these days. With the introduction of free hacking software, almost anyone can sneak into your Wi-Fi network and pry on your internet activities. Recently, new software was introduced by a freelance software developer with the intention of pointing out the vulnerabilities in the cyber world. The software, called Firesheep, is extremely easy to use and lets notorious users access your account. Lack of end-to-end encryption at most airports, Starbucks and free WI-FI services is what the software takes advantage of as it attempts hacks into your wireless session.

IT Support TorontoYou never know when your privacy is going to be invaded. Web addresses that begin with “https” instead of “http” and a little lock at the corner of your browser shows that you are on a secure website.  As mentioned already, not encrypting all communication is to blame for most hackings and several websites have still not considered full encryption. Business owners are lead to believe that implementing encryption systems on their websites will slow down the website and huge engineering expenses are reasons they give for not doing so.

While website owners are pondering over the encryption debate, you can take necessary steps to protect your privacy. If you are dealing with sensitive information, it is highly recommended that you work via home wireless networks. Again, you must remember that wired networks are prone to hacking. This does not mean that wireless networks are immune because WI-FI cracking programs like Gerix WiFi Cracker, Aircrack-ng and Wifite are widely available. No matter how much effort is made, hackers are always one step ahead of those trying to protect us.

For now, setting up a Virtual Private Network can be a foolproof option where your data will appear gibberish to your intruder until it is blasted on the internet. You could also consider using complex and less predictable passwords for your wireless network.

Let’s go behind the scenes and take a closer look at what the new changes are that Facebook presented to everyone:

  • Photos at the top:  Your most recent photos that you upload to the Wall of a Page you admin, or photos you tag your Page in will appear at the top. Don’t expect to see any photos that people post when they “Like” your Page, though.
  • Use Facebook as your Page: Now you can receive notifications for your Page and view a News Feed for your Page. But wait – that’s not all. You can also like and post on other Pages as your Page.
  • Wall Filters: Page admins will now have two more filters that they will have the option of choosing which will include filtering by “Most Recent” and “Hidden Posts.”
  • Email Notifications – Want to know when someone posts or comments on your Page? Now you can order an email notification to let you know.
  • Featured Pages and admins: You have more choices on what you want to feature – whether it be other Pages your Page likes, or admins of your Page. There’s an area for that now.
  • Mutual Connections: When you have visitors to you page, they’ll be able to view friends who also like your Page, as well as other Pages that they and your Page like.
  • Navigation: Meant to be more user-friendly now, content that you previously obtained via tabs will now be able to be accessed in a column underneath your profile picture.
