An app that sends messages for you when you tell it to; an app that uses your voice to schedule meetings and place phone calls; an app that knows what you say, understands what you mean, and even talks back; sounds like an app straight out of a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it? Well, believe it or not but there actually IS an app just like this (yes, it does everything we’ve mentioned above!)! Known as Siri, this app is available on iPhone 4S and does so much for you that you’ll have a hard time keeping yourself from saying “wow” out loud every time you use it. So, here are some amazing things that you can expect Siri to do for you:

  • It understands what you say: Ever wondered how it would be like to have a conversation with your iPhone? Well, it’s possible now! With Siri, you can talk as you would to a person and make it do things for you by giving it voice commands. Just say something like “Tell my wife I’m running late.” “Remind me to call the vet.” or “Any good burger joints around here?”  and Siri does what you say or finds the information you need. When it’s done doing what you’ve told it to do, it even answers you back!
  • It knows what you mean: Since Siri understands what you say, there’s no doubt it has intelligence. But here’s the kicker; it could have knowledge too! Why, you ask? Because it knows what you mean! It knows what you’re talking about and looks up info to find what you are looking for. Siri is proactive, so you can expect it to keep questioning you until it finds what you’re looking for.
  • It helps you do the things you do every day: Whether you want to text your dad or call the dentist, set a reminder or find directions, you can always ask Siri to help you. Siri figures out which apps to use and who you’re talking about, so all you have to do is talk. On getting your command, it finds answers for you from the web through sources like Yelp and WolframAlpha and it uses Location Services to look up where you live, where you work, and where you are. You are then given the information and the best options based on your current location. It even knows your friends, family, boss, and coworkers from the details in your contacts!
  • It has so much to tell you: Siri uses all the built-in apps on iPhone 4S. It writes and sends email messages and texts, it searches the web for anything you need to know, it plays the songs you want to hear and it gives you directions. And what’s more? It even places calls, schedules meetings, helps you remember, and wakes you up. As if this weren’t enough, it speaks for itself too!

Siri does so much for you and all you need to do is use your voice! Really, there could have been no better catchphrase for Siri than the one it has now: “Your wish is its command”.

Oh! Wait! iPhone takes dictation too which means there’s one more excuse for you to use your voice instead of your fingers. Whether you want to write messages, take notes, or search the web (or do much more), all you need to do is tap the microphone icon on the keyboard instead of typing and say what you want to say as iPhone listens. Tap Done, and the words you just said will be converted into text!  Dictation also works with third-party apps, so you can update your Facebook status, tweet, or write and send Instagrams. Could it get any easier than this?

10 Tips to measure your Toronto Social Media success

Social media is literally exploding and if you haven’t taken advantage of it yet, well…it’s time you did. Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself, a book by Erik Deckers and Kyle Lacy gives you ten tools for social media measurement which will help you do just that!

  1. If you want to track, measure, and increase your influence in the world of Twitter, Twitter Grader (www.twittergrader.com) is the name of the game. All you need to do is enter your Twitter name and the system pulls data for your account. And there’s more…You can even track the history of your follower growth or the amount of tweets that were sent. Plus, this site also lets you track your influence among your specific location and ranks you based on influence.
  2. From the creators of Twitter Grader comes yet another website called Website Grader (www.websitegrader.com) that allows you to enter your website with a competitor and receive a report that has information like blog analysis, blog grade, recent blog articles, Google index pages, and readability level. It also helps you optimize your content from headings to images and gives you a report that is extremely comprehensive and worthwhile.
  3. Twitalyzer (www.twitalyzer.com), an intense Twitter management, measuring and monitoring tool, lets you do a lot on Twitter which includes automatic daily updates, full data export, email support, weekly email reports, phone support, custom URL shortener, and multiple-account tracking.
  4. Google PageRank is an algorithm Google uses to assign numerical weighting to each element of a website with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance with other sites. The higher the PR the more important your site is. If you want to check what your Google PageRank is, you can always use the PR Checker PageRank tool at www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php. All you need to do is enter your URL and the tool generates your PageRank while giving you additional information on how to expand the number.
  5. BackType (www.backtype.com) is an amazing system that allows you to measure your impact in social media and that too, for free! After you enter your URL in the box (looks very much like Google), BackType gives you information about your latest pages, your top influencers, and where the majority of your interaction is happening on the web.
  6. If you want to check the rankings for a domain for a particular set of keywords or phrases, consider using Key Word Rank Checker (www.scriptalicious.com/tools/keyword-rank-checker/). Or you could find other tools to do the same tasking with some help from the good ol’ Google. Your keywords for finding your key word rank checker should be “free keyword rank checker”.
  7. Want a system that tracks where and how users engage and what they pay attention to? In real time? Then PostRank (www.postrank.com) is “the” tool for you. Its social engagement data measures actual user activity, the most accurate indicator of the relevance and influence of a site, story, or author. You don’t want to miss this site as it is the largest aggregator of social engagement data on the Internet.
  8. Whether it is tracking single domains, multiple domains, advanced dashboard for data layout, real-time data analytics feed or customer support, Bit.ly Pro (http://bit.ly/pro) is the tool you should be using. It could also help in measuring how many people click a specific link.
  9. Somewhat PostRank-like, HootSuite (www.hootsuite.com) is a system that offers an analytics suite that helps you track links and the Klout scores of your followers. And it’s free!
  10. Twitrratr (www.twitrratr.com) is an extremely valuable tool. Why, you ask? Because it measures what people are saying about a given keyword and even tries to measure sentiment with positive, neutral, and negative outpourings from Twitter. The site might not be 100% accurate, but it can still be a valuable addition to your social media measurement suite.
